Scientists Develop Affordable Test Kits For Cattle Diseases

Must read

Scientists based in Bengaluru have developed user-friendly test kits aimed at early detection of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) and Brucellosis among cattle. Developed by experts from the Indian Council for Agricultural Research – National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (NIVEDI), these kits were unveiled and distributed during the annual review meeting of the National Animal Disease Epidemiology Network held at the Bengaluru campus.

Baldev R Gulati, Director of NIVEDI, highlighted the significance of these ‘Made In India’ kits in combating the spread of these diseases. The kits, priced at Rs 100 and Rs 50 respectively, are crucial for early detection and control, he highlighted. The central government is keen on introducing a vaccine to tackle Brucellosis, which not only affects cattle but also poses risks to humans.

Senior scientist Manjunath Reddy, who spearheaded the development of the LSD test kit, explained its impact: Previously, LSD test kits were imported, and results were obtained through lab testing. The new antibody test kits operate similarly to PCR test kits used during the Covid-19 pandemic, delivering results within minutes. These kits underwent rigorous testing on over 15,000 samples over the course of a year.

Rajeshwari Shome, Principal Scientist at ICAR specializing in Brucellosis, elaborated on the advancements made with the new kit: “The latest version marks an improvement over previous imported versions. Initially developed in 2015 using animal protein, the new iteration functions akin to pregnancy test kits, offering quick results in 2-3 minutes from blood or semen samples. The revised kit has been distributed to 25 states for evaluation and feedback.
