Six people succumbed to heatstroke in Tokyo over the weekend, according to source report on Tuesday, amidst an unprecedented heat wave accompanied by summer humidity gripping the nation. The Tokyo Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed three deaths on Saturday and another three on Monday.
Temperatures in Tokyo peaked at 34.2 degrees Celsius and soared to a scorching 36 degrees Celsius on the respective days, as reported by source.
The ongoing heat wave has resulted in a sharp rise in heatstroke incidents nationwide. Last week alone, 9,105 individuals were rushed to emergency rooms across Japan due to heatstroke, according to data from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. This marks a significant increase from the previous week’s 2,276 cases.
Compared to the same period last year, the number of heatstroke patients has nearly doubled, totaling 19 deaths and 210 individuals in serious condition among cases amounting to 6,800 more compared to the previous week’s data, which saw 2,276 cases.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautionary measures against heatstroke, highlighting the importance of staying hydrated and using air conditioning effectively to combat the extreme heat.
