Traffic Woes Persist As Under Bridge Project At Gorguntepalya Junction Stalls

Must read

The long-awaited under bridge construction project near Gorguntepalya Junction on Tumakuru Road in Bengaluru has hit a roadblock, aggravating traffic woes for commuters. Despite the tender being issued a year ago, the project has remained stagnant, drawing frustration from residents and commuters alike.

The ambitious project, estimated to span 6-8 kilometers at a cost of ₹1,665 crore, involves collaboration between the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA), Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Originally conceived during the previous BJP government, the project was tendered and subsequently sidelined when the government changed hands.

Presently, the current Congress government has yet to revive the project, despite several meetings held over the years. M. PJB Engineers Pvt Ltd had initially won the contract through a tender process, which has now been left in limbo.

The congestion at Gorguntepalya Junction, a critical entry point on National Highway 4 (Tumakuru Road) into Bengaluru, has become unbearable for commuters traveling from neighboring states and districts. Traffic snarls extend to the flyover near Peenya, affecting vehicles arriving from Hebbal, Horawarthula Road, Tumkur, and the Circle Road.

The signal system at the junction exacerbates the situation, causing significant delays of up to 30 minutes for vehicles on all approaches. Vehicles from Bengaluru side back up towards Yeswantpur Industries, those from Tumkur side halt near Peenya, and Circle Road traffic stagnates towards Kantheerava Studio Road.

Residents and commuters are urging authorities from BDA, BBMP, and NHAI to prioritize the under bridge project’s completion to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity in the area.
