Russia thwarted an attempt by Ukrainian special services to hijack a Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bomber abroad, according to source citing the Federal Security Service (FSB). The FSB, as reported by source, noted the involvement of NATO special services in planning and executing the operation.

Ukrainian intelligence sought to recruit a Russian military pilot with promises of monetary rewards and Italian citizenship to convince them to fly and land the bomber in Ukraine, reported to source citing the FSB statement. Concurrently, Russian counterintelligence obtained crucial information during the operation, aiding in a targeted strike at a Ukrainian air base.

The Tu-22M3 is a long-range supersonic bomber capable of launching guided missiles and bombs at sea and land targets. It is equipped to carry both nuclear and conventional weaponry.
