New Delhi
In a development on Saturday, Delhi’s Tis Hazari court extended the judicial custody of Bibhav Kumar, former aide to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, for another 10 days in connection with the alleged assault case involving Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal. Bibhav Kumar appeared via video conferencing after the expiry of his previous judicial custody, which began on May 31 following his interrogation in the case.
Judicial Magistrate First Class Gaurav Goyal granted the extension of custody until July 16, complying with the Delhi Police’s request for further custody. Advocate Karan Sharma, representing Bibhav Kumar, opposed the police plea during the virtual proceedings. The court also directed that the accused be presented via video conferencing for future hearings.
Bibhav Kumar was arrested by Delhi Police on May 18, prompted by a complaint from Swati Maliwal regarding an alleged assault on May 13. Earlier, the court had granted his request to appear via video conferencing citing safety concerns. Additionally, the Delhi High Court issued notice to Delhi Police in response to Bibhav Kumar’s plea challenging the legality of his arrest, scheduling a detailed hearing.
Previously, Bibhav Kumar’s bail petition was dismissed by the trial court, which noted the early stage of the investigation and concerns over potential witness tampering and evidence interference.
