The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to introduce Bengaluru’s inaugural unidirectional elevated rotary flyover near Mukunda Theatre, aimed at alleviating congestion around Sir MV Terminal in Byappanahalli. Despite efforts to upgrade Sir MV Terminal with airport-like amenities, traffic challenges persist due to narrow approach roads and heavy congestion.
With an allocated budget of Rs 380 crores, which involves the dismantling of the existing IOC flyover. Recently, BBMP issued a tender for the construction, marking a significant step towards realization. The project also encompasses the addition of two lanes to the Railway over Bridge (ROB) at Baiyyappanahalli Railways level crossing.
The project features a 4.5 km long elevated rotary flyover stretching from Maruthi Sevanagar near ITC Limited to Banaswadi Main Road. The flyover includes a circular junction offering exits towards Kammanahalli, Old Madras Road, Banaswadi, and Sir MV Terminal. Traffic will flow unidirectionally clockwise within the circular junction, with vehicles exiting through designated options. Each lane within the junction measures 3.5 meters wide, complemented by 7.5-meter-wide approach ramps. To ensure safety within the circular junction, vehicle speeds will be capped at 30 km/h. The junction, expected to have a diameter of 95 meters, will be strategically positioned near Mukunda Theatre.
Experts anticipate that the flyover will effectively divert regular traffic away from Sir MV Terminal onto the flyover, thereby easing congestion on the specific approach road leading to the terminal.
The project’s alignment with the needs of South Western Railways (SWR) minimizes the requirement for private land acquisition. SWR has committed 15,000 sqm of land for the project, with minimal impact on private properties.
