Samantha Mostyn was sworn in on Monday as Australia’s 28th Governor-General, marking a historic moment as the second woman to hold this esteemed position. As the representative of King Charles III, the British monarch, Mostyn assumes constitutional responsibilities such as appointing the Prime Minister and ministers, overseeing elections, and granting royal assent to parliamentary bills.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Mostyn’s appointment in April, succeeding David Hurley after his five-year tenure. Mostyn, 59, brings a diverse background, initially practicing law before serving on numerous corporate and non-profit boards, including roles with the Climate Council and mental health advocate Beyond Blue. Before her appointment, she chaired the government’s Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce.
