Rishi Sunak, who resigned as UK Prime Minister on Friday, has announced his intention to step down as leader of the Conservative Party following the General Election outcome. Speaking outside the Prime Minister’s office at Downing Street, Sunak acknowledged the public’s mandate for change.

I have given everything to this role, but your message is clear that the UK government must change. Your judgment is paramount, Sunak stated in a brief address. He expressed regret for the party’s electoral defeat and apologized to Conservative candidates and campaigners for not achieving their deserved success.

Taking responsibility for the Conservative Party’s disappointing performance, Sunak also defended his government’s achievements during its 14-year tenure, highlighting economic stability, controlled inflation, lower mortgage rates, and revived economic growth.

While it is challenging, I leave with pride in having served as Prime Minister of our exceptional nation, Sunak remarked before departing with his wife for Buckingham Palace. There, he formally tendered his resignation to King Charles.

The announcement comes amid political turbulence following the election, signaling a leadership transition within the Conservative Party as they prepare for a new phase under a yet-to-be-determined successor to Sunak.
