Mangaluru

Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur said Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will soon launch a drive to evict illegal footpath vendors in the city. All footpaths will be cleared for the convenience of pedestrians. A team of officials will soon launch the drive, the mayor said at a phone-in programme held at the city corporation.
Soon after a caller complained about footpaths in the city being encroached upon by vendors, the Mayor directed Health and Revenue officials of the MCC to clear all those street vendors who pose a hindrance to the movement of pedestrians in various parts of the city. The Mayor received several complaints about street food vendors in Mahaveer Circle and Kankanady posing a hindrance to the movement of pedestrians. Karunakara Shetty, a caller, said mobile canteens that function on Falnir- Ambedkar Circle Road in the morning pose an inconvenience to the movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
The Mayor said he has directed revenue officials to conduct a survey of the government land to mark vending zones for street vendors in each ward. After the marking of vending zones, if the street vendors continue to encroach footpaths, then action will be taken against them, he said.

The Mayor then said he also has raised the issue of the poor quality of work on the retaining wall in the Smart City Board meeting.  A team from the NGT has also conducted an inspection on the violation of CRZ rules. The collapsed retaining wall will be rebuilt by the contractor, and the MSCL will not be making payment for it. Through the MSCL Chairman, action will be initiated for poor quality of works. At present, the work has been stalled and will resume only after getting clearance from the NGT, Shetty said.
