The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced ambitious plans to revamp 20 major junctions and roads across the city, aiming to improve both aesthetics and air quality. These enhancements come in response to concerns over poor air quality at some locations, with a focus on introducing green spaces to mitigate environmental impact.
The project, estimated at Rs 20 crore, includes comprehensive improvements such as desilting and reconstruction of drains, demolition of dilapidated footpaths, installation of edge kerbs and pavers, construction of ramps, and provision of bollards for enhanced safety. Additionally, the initiative encompasses significant landscaping efforts, involving the planting of trees, flowering plants, shrubs, and ground covers across the selected junctions.
Among the identified locations for transformation are prominent junctions like Tagore Circle, Dairy Circle, TC Palya Junction, Jedi Mara Junction, and others spread across different parts of the city. These junctions have been chosen based on their strategic importance and existing air quality conditions, with specific attention given to areas lacking greenery.
BBMP officials highlighted the dual objectives of the project: enhancing pedestrian infrastructure through geometric corrections while simultaneously promoting green spaces to improve air quality. The initiative also includes upgrading lighting facilities to ensure adequate illumination and safety at these busy intersections.
Regarding funding allocation, Rs 2 crore has been earmarked specifically for landscaping activities aimed at increasing green coverage. A senior BBMP official highlighted that geometric corrections and infrastructure upgrades, excluding landscaping, account for the remaining Rs 18 crore of the project budget.
