Floral tributes were paid to the statue of former CM Devaraja Urs on the occasion of his 42nd death anniversary near Vidhana Soudha, organized by the Backward Classes Welfare Department. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed that our government is striving to follow Devaraja Urs’s path as a tribute to his leadership within the Congress party.
Speaking to the media, Siddaramaiah emphasized Urs’s efforts in bringing about change in the state, highlighting his dedication to social justice and economic upliftment. During his tenure, Urs implemented various schemes aimed at empowering the downtrodden economically, socially, and politically. Notably, he established the Havanur Commission and introduced reservation for backward classes in education and employment sectors.
The renaming of Mysore State to Karnataka in 1973, as part of the Karnataka Ekikarana Movement, was attributed to Urs’s leadership. Siddaramaiah underscored Urs’s role in laying the groundwork for social justice, citing his contributions to land reforms, including the Land Reforms Act, which recognized the tiller as the owner.
Urs’s eight-year tenure as Chief Minister is remembered for his advocacy for the poor and oppressed, positioning him as a pioneer of social justice. Siddaramaiah criticized other political parties for lacking commitment to social justice, contrasting them with the Congress party’s stance. He asserted that the Congress party remains dedicated to the principles of social justice, distinguishing it from its counterparts.
