In the midst of a significant rise in private vehicle ownership in Bengaluru, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has recorded an improvement in the distance covered by its buses. Figures tells that BMTC buses traveled an average of 203 km per day during the 2023-24 period, compared to 186 km the previous year.
This enhancement in distance covered can be attributed to several strategic measures implemented by BMTC officials. Notably, the extension of regular shift hours from 8 to 10-11 p.m., along with the deployment of buses on long-distance routes, has contributed to this positive trend.
According to BMTC officials, the extension of shift hours, coupled with payment of additional wages for overtime, has facilitated optimal utilization of vehicles. Additionally, the operation of e-buses during extended hours has further bolstered efficiency. The availability of longer routes spanning 50-60 km has also played a vital role in maximizing bus utilization.
Despite the staggering number of private vehicles in the city, which has surpassed the 1 crore mark, the growth in BMTC’s fleet has not kept pace. Presently, the corporation operates 6,100 buses, including newly introduced e-buses.
Reflecting on the changing dynamics, an official remarked on the contrast from 15 years ago when each bus covered 220 km per day due to fewer vehicles on the roads. However, with the current congestion, particularly evident in traffic hotspots like Central Silk Board, Hebbal, Tin Factory, Sarakki, and Gorguntepalya, challenges persist for bus operations. Nevertheless, efforts are underway to navigate these obstacles and ensure efficient public transportation services amidst the city’s evolving landscape.
