Residents of Bengaluru region can anticipate a break from the sweltering heat, as per the predictions of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which forecasts light to moderate showers for the next five days. This rainfall is expected to be a consequence of a cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast, coupled with the northward movement of Cyclone Remal in the central Bay of Bengal. While the depression in the Bay of Bengal is distant and unlikely to directly impact the region, the cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea is anticipated to induce light thunderstorms particularly in Bengaluru and the interior regions of North and South Karnataka.
An IMD scientist elaborated, stating that the cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea, situated approximately 5.8 kilometers above sea level off the Kerala coast, is likely to result in light thunderstorms across Karnataka. However, the depression in the Bay of Bengal, caused by Cyclone Remal, is too distant to directly influence the weather in the region.
Despite the expected reduction in rainfall over the next five days, the forecast indicates that the southwest monsoon is poised to enter the state by the first week of June.
For Bengaluru, which has endured a prolonged dry spell spanning six months, the moderate to heavy rains in several parts of the city brought relief. IMD data reveals that Bengaluru Urban experienced a departure of 96 percent from normal rainfall between May 16 and May 22.
These impending showers offer much-needed respite for Bengaluru residents who have grappled with the effects of a heatwave. Last month, the city recorded its second-hottest day in 50 years, with temperatures soaring to 38.2 degrees Celsius.
