BBMP Implements New Flood Management Technology In Raj Canals

Must read

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has led the installation of cutting-edge technology along the Raj canals. Working in collaboration with KSNDMC, BBMP has strategically placed water level measuring sensors at 124 key locations along the canals. Notably, each sensor is powered by solar energy, ensuring sustainability and uninterrupted functionality.

This technology enables real-time monitoring of water levels, with data transmitted instantly to the KSNDMC control room via the internet. From there, the information is relayed to BBMP’s Integrated Command Control Center (ICCC), facilitating swift and informed decision-making in emergency situations. These sensors are equipped with indicators, categorized into green, blue, red, and black, signifying varying levels of water flow. While green and blue indicate safe conditions, red signals potential danger, and black serves as a warning for imminent floods.

BBMP has embarked on a comprehensive desilting initiative along the Raja canals. This effort aims to ensure unimpeded water flow, critical for effective flood management. With responsibility for overseeing 860 km of canals, BBMP has constructed RCC barrages covering 581 km, with an additional 199 km undergoing development. Efforts are also underway to address the remaining 80 km, particularly affected by raw sewage, through dredging operations.

Meanwhile, BBMP is addressing the city’s 74 flood-prone areas, implementing measures to provide sustainable relief. A senior BBMP official affirmed the organization’s commitment to safeguarding residents during the rainy season, highlighting the establishment of temporary arrangements to mitigate potential risks.
