After two years of severe flooding in Bengaluru’s tech corridor of Mahadevapura, the city’s civic body has greenlit 47 projects aimed at preventing future inundations. These projects, totaling Rs 50 crore, will focus on enhancing infrastructure, particularly roads and drainage systems, in the area.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) aims to fortify the tech city’s infrastructure to avert future flooding disasters, following the extensive damage caused by territorial rains, which submerged complexes, villas, and independent houses, while flooding numerous roads and uprooting thousands of trees, leading to traffic disruptions and evacuations.
The initiative was prompted by an action plan drafted immediately after the floods, but its implementation was delayed until now due to various factors, including the Assembly elections. The state government’s circular in July 2023 mandated approval from the former before commencing civic works.
Initially allocated Rs 60 crore, the budget was later trimmed to Rs 50 crore. The approved proposal, finalized on March 15, will primarily target flood control measures, with work orders expected to be issued soon. The projects aim to improve drains, culverts, and roads in flood-affected areas such as Whitefield, Hagadur, Munnekollal, Marathahalli, Doddanekkundi, AECS Layout, Kadugodi, Varthur, Hoodi, Bellandur, Doddakannelli, and Garudachar Palya.
According to BBMP officials, the funds will be utilized for constructing RCC retaining walls, culverts, and asphalt roads, with the aim of completing the work within six months.
