Former Chief Minister and BJP candidate for Gadag-Haveri Lok Sabha constituency, Basavaraj Bommai, highlighted a 43 percent increase in atrocities against women in the state since the Congress Party came into power. Speaking to the media on Friday, Bommai expressed concern over the collapse of law and order, describing the state as a haven for lawlessness. Despite police apprehensions, culprits often escape with the aid of political influence.

He cited an incident where a boy stabbed a girl nine times within a college campus, underscoring the power wielded by the perpetrator. Bommai criticized the Home Minister for attributing such incidents to mere love stories, stating that such remarks provide support to miscreants. While the Home Minister characterized it as a love story, the Police Commissioner labeled it as a failed love affair culminating in the girl’s murder, deeming such statements irresponsible.

Bommai also raised concerns about the Haveri rape incident being initially concealed, only coming to light after the victim’s public statement. When questioned about Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s assertion that similar incidents occurred during Bommai’s tenure, the former Chief Minister questioned how a Deputy Chief Minister could justify such cases. He emphasized the need to address the underlying causes behind the rise in mass murders, noting that the victim’s father had information implicating four additional individuals who remain at large.
