Last month, eight individuals reportedly experienced adverse effects following cataract surgery at a hospital in Indore, leading the local authorities to seal the hospital’s operating theater and initiate an investigation, officials revealed on Sunday. The severity of these patients’ conditions, including whether they have experienced vision loss, remains uncertain, pending the completion of the investigation.
According to District Blindness Control Society manager Dr. Pradeep Goyal, a three-member committee has been formed by the local administration to investigate the causes behind the patients’ side effects. The surgeries were conducted on 79 patients on March 20 at Choithram Netralaya in Madhya Pradesh, as part of the National Programme for Control of Blindness.
The hospital’s operation theater, where the cataract surgeries were performed, has been sealed as part of the ongoing inquiry. However, Ashwini Verma, a managing trustee of Choithram Nethralaya, asserted that there was no negligence on the hospital’s part during the cataract surgery camp. Verma stated that the eight patients experienced eye reactions for unknown reasons and were discharged after receiving treatment. They hailed from various districts within the Indore division.
