The Hague
Climate activist Greta Thunberg was detained twice by police in the Netherlands during a demonstration against fossil fuel subsidies. Over 400 people, including 12 for incitement, were detained. Thunberg was first taken into custody for blocking a major road with protesters. Released briefly, she was detained again while obstructing another road leading to the train station. The environmental group Extinction Rebellion (XR) organized the march to pressure the Dutch government ahead of a discussion on fossil fuel subsidies in June. Police, including mounted officers, prevented demonstrators from entering the motorway, warning of potential violence.
