Cinema often has a penchant for portraying real-life conmen in a favorable light, opting to romanticize their exploits rather than vilify them. “Mr Natwarlal” exemplifies this trend, drawing inspiration from the notorious fraudster Mithilesh Kumar Srivastava, widely known as Natwarlal, and presenting its protagonist as a charismatic yet notorious scam artist. However, what sets this film apart is its departure from the conventional portrayal of such characters; here, the protagonist is endowed with a compelling justification for his actions, blurring the lines between villainy and righteousness. In his directorial debut, Lava Kaggere adeptly navigates the delicate balance between entertainment and moral ambiguity, resulting in a captivating and worthwhile cinematic experience.

The narrative of “Mr Natwarlal” is far from linear. Kaggere intricately weaves together four distinct subplots—ranging from family drama to serial murder, abductions, and online scams—that unfold simultaneously, gradually revealing their interconnectedness. The film seamlessly merges exhilarating con acts with poignant emotional moments, ensuring sustained audience engagement throughout. Despite the audience’s foreknowledge of Natwarlal’s identity, the revelation within the story still manages to evoke a sense of sensation, a testament to the director’s mastery in maintaining suspense and intrigue.

Tanush Shivanna delivers a standout performance as Natwarlal, effortlessly embodying the master criminal with finesse and charisma. His character’s enigmatic nature poses a formidable challenge to law enforcement, resulting in a thrilling cat-and-mouse game that captivates viewers. The film delves into Natwarlal’s motivations, providing depth to his actions and offering a compelling justification for his criminal endeavors. The relentless pursuit by the police leads to a series of exhilarating and suspenseful sequences that keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

In addition to Shivanna’s stellar performance, the supporting cast, particularly Nagabhushana and Rajesh Nataranga, deliver solid performances, seamlessly inhabiting their respective roles. Sonal Monteiro, in particular, shines as more than just a glamorous addition, bringing substance to her character. Overall, “Mr Natwarlal” distinguishes itself from the crowd, offering a nuanced portrayal of its characters and justifying its place in theaters as a compelling and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
