Mangaluru

Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur has proposed a water supply board for Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), along the lines of BBMP, to tackle the drinking water crisis in the city.
He directed officials to take steps to supply drinking water to affected areas in tankers, and identify additional sources of water in the city. Holding a review meeting, the mayor directed that at least 10 tankers should be arranged to supply drinking water to areas where MCC’s water supply from Thumbe dam was not restored.
All open wells of the government should be cleaned up, and the treated water from it should be supplied to residents.
Corporators from the ruling and opposition parties raised the issue of disruption in water supply in their respective wards, they have complained that engineers and officials of the MCC were not receiving calls. Opposition leader in MCC Council, Praveen Chandra Alva, said that the MCC’s dam at Thumbe has sufficient water, and the crisis is only because of faulty management in the distribution.
All illegal connections on the main pipeline between Thumbe and Mangaluru should be disconnected. The corporation could increase the water inflow to its pump house in Bendoor well in the city by about 4.5 MLD, after conducting a day-long drive against illegal connections recently. If such drives are continued, the water availability to the city will increase. Chief whip of the Council Premanand Shetty, said that the demand for water in the city has been increasing gradually. Hence, the city corporation needs to take measures to ensure uninterrupted water supply on priority, he said, adding that the illegal connections within the city should be removed.
