The Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangh (KRRS) President Badagalapura Nagendra said that they have planned a huge convention of farmers at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on February 10, demanding the Centre and state to formulate a pro-farmer budget. This convention will be held in memory of Prof MD Nanjundaswamy, who fought for the welfare of farmers throughout his life.
Addressing media persons, Badagalapura Nagendra said that the condition of farmers in the state continues to deteriorate.
State and Central Governments are not implementing schemes to empower farmers. A terrible drought is raging across the state. Even the state government is not able to manage this situation. A permanent solution to drought is needed now, he said.
The state now ranks second in the country in terms of severe drought conditions. It also ranks second in farmer suicide cases. This is a matter of concern, he said. “Government schemes are needed to strengthen the economy of rural areas. The state government is giving cash to PDS beneficiaries as it has not been able to distribute rice as scheduled. If steps are taken to distribute Jowar and Ragi instead of cash, it will also benefit farmers, he suggested.
The government said it will withdraw the Land Reforms Amendment Act, APMC Act, and Cattle Slaughter Prohibition Act but has not done so to date. A firm decision should be taken in this regard in the upcoming budget, he said.
Farmers’ convention will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. State President Badagalpura Nagendra will preside. Social Welfare Minister HC Mahadevappa, MLA and Chief Minister’s Advisor BR Patil and Darshan Puttannaiah will be the chief guests. Honourary president of KRRS Chamarasa Mali Patil will be the keynote speaker.
