Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud division of e-commerce giant Amazon, has announced a significant investment of approximately $15.5 billion (about 2.3 trillion yen) in Japan over the next five years, spanning from 2023 to 2027. This substantial investment aims to enhance and expand data centers, critical facilities for cloud computing services, and bolster overall business operations. The new commitment follows a prior investment of 1.51 trillion yen (about $10.1 billion) made in Japan between 2011 and 2022 to increase cloud capacity. The primary objective of this investment is to meet the surging demand for cloud computing services from Japanese businesses and governmental entities. The focus is particularly on addressing the anticipated growth in generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the future. Last year in May, AWS had announced plans to invest Rs 1,05,600 crore ($12.7 billion) in cloud infrastructure in India by 2030, responding to the increasing demand for cloud services in the country. This followed a prior investment of Rs 30,900 crore ($3.7 billion) made between 2016-2022. AWS currently operates two data center infrastructure regions in India, namely the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region, launched in 2016, and the AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region, inaugurated in November 2022.
