The state government’s Yuva Nidhi scheme, the fifth guarantee aimed at providing financial support to educated unemployed youth, has so far evoked only lukewarm response in the district. This dismal response to the scheme is contrary to the what the state government and the district administration would have anticipated.Since the application process began on December 26, 2023, only 1,800 applications have been received in Dharwad, contrary to the enthusiastic response the scheme has garnered in other districts such as Belagavi, Bagalkot, Raichur, and Vijayapura. Official statistics reveal that in the 2022-23 academic year, an estimated 8,537 students including 7,246 from degree colleges and 1,291 from polytechnic colleges had passed in the district and were therefore eligible for the scheme. A district-wise report shows a total of 58,863 beneficiaries having applied for the scheme across the state.
