In a recent decision, the Karnataka government has resolved to take control of the schools and colleges under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika (BBMP) starting from the next academic year. The move comes in response to various issues, including teacher shortages and management concerns within BBMP educational institutions. Following the decision to hand over 142 primary and high schools along with 17 Pre-University (PU) colleges under BBMP management, the government is now considering including degree colleges in this transition. Discussions are anticipated with the Higher Education Department to finalize the process. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has emphasized the need for this transfer, citing reasons such as teacher shortages and managerial neglect within BBMP schools and colleges. The move is expected to improve educational standards and overall management efficiency. The decision has raised concerns among outsourced teachers associated with BBMP schools and colleges, leading to protests and calls for reconsideration. Despite these challenges, BBMP is gearing up to discuss the handover of BBMP degree colleges with the Higher Education Department, expressing readiness to support the government in managing and enhancing educational quality in the institutions.
