In a significant move towards enhancing road safety and traffic management, Bengaluru is set to install 50 new adaptive traffic signals within the next three months. As part of the Bengaluru City Road Safety and Traffic Management Project, the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has issued a tender for the provision, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of these automated signals at 51 new junctions in the city. Under this initiative, the Bengaluru City Traffic Police will oversee the implementation of the adaptive signals at a cost of Rs 7,90,09,740. These signals, equipped with automation features, have the capability to allocate signal time based on real-time traffic volume, enhancing efficiency and responsiveness. The planned locations for these adaptive signals are strategically distributed across the city. Thirteen junctions are designated in the Traffic East division, fourteen in the West division, eleven in the North division, and thirteen in the South division. Apart from automation, these signals can be controlled individually or as part of a group through the central traffic control center, allowing for flexible configurations along corridors or regions. Key features of the adaptive signal system include remote control capabilities, communication with the ATCS system server through stable networks, optimization of traffic light timings using crowdsource data, and the ability to grant priority to emergency vehicles equipped with GPS units. The system aims to improve overall traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance emergency response efficiency. Notable junctions slated for the introduction of these adaptive signals include War Memorial Junction, Chandrika Junction, Kalyan Nagar Junction, Hennur Junction, Nice Road Junction, A Krishnappa Junction, Channasandra Junction, Seegehalli Junction, Kodathi Junction, Siddappa Reddy Junction, New Light Junction, among others, as outlined in the tender document. The introduction of these adaptive signals aligns with Bengaluru’s commitment to leveraging technology for smarter and more efficient urban infrastructure.
