Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the Election Commission, stating that it has failed to provide a substantive response to concerns over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) raised by INDIA parties. Ramesh expressed disappointment over the Commission’s dismissal of the request for an appointment to discuss these concerns and suggested improvements for the upcoming elections.

In his letter to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, Ramesh emphasized the need for an audience to address unresolved queries and legitimate concerns regarding EVMs and VVPATs. He criticized the Commission’s reliance on generic FAQs, pointing out that these do not adequately address specific queries.

Ramesh highlighted the Commission’s refusal to engage with political participants on the issue and its reliance on judicial orders, noting that the pending legal proceedings do not bar discussions with INDIA parties. He expressed concern over the denial of an opportunity for political parties, representing a significant portion of the popular vote, to meet with the Commission. In response, the Election Commission, dismissing Ramesh’s concerns, asserted its full faith in the use of EVMs and stated that the latest FAQs adequately address all reasonable and legitimate aspects. The Commission maintained that Ramesh’s assertions raised no new doubts requiring further clarification.
