As Bengaluru revels in Christmas celebrations, a heartbreaking incident marred the festivities as laborers engaged in construction work faced a tragic accident due to owner negligence in Suddaguntepalya. The incident, resulting in the loss of a laborer’s life, occurred while excavating soil for a building’s foundation, leading to a collapse that claimed a worker’s life. This unfortunate incident highlights a series of tragedies in the state capital where several workers have lost their lives due to insufficient safety measures during building construction. The recent collapse, witnessed during the ongoing construction, resulted in a building’s collapse adjacent to the site. Amid the Christmas cheer, the incident unfolded under the jurisdiction of the Suddaguntepalya Police Station, where emergency responders rushed to the scene. Despite the prompt efforts of the Suddaguntepalya police and fire brigade, a laborer named Ranjan, hailing from Sompur in Bihar, lost his life in the soil collapse. The rescue operation, involving locals and firefighters, successfully extricated two workers trapped beneath the debris, but tragically, Ranjan couldn’t be saved. During the rescue attempts by local youths, another compound collapsed, although the rescuers escaped with minor injuries due to the relatively low height of the structure. Regrettably, three individuals involved in the rescue mission were caught under the debris. The incident occurred during foundation excavation for a new building, leading to the collapse that trapped two laborers. Despite the valiant efforts of locals, firefighters, and machinery, one worker lost his life in the tragic turn of events. Addressing the incident, South East Division DCP CK Baba confirmed the occurrence around 2:30 pm, citing the excavation for an upcoming apartment complex. The collapse occurred when the machinery entered the adjacent three-story building, causing the soil to cave in on two workers. While investigations continue, action will be taken against the responsible parties, including the owner and contractor, despite their prior permissions from BBMP. This unfortunate event underscores the urgency for stringent safety protocols and regulations within the construction sector to prevent such tragedies and ensure the well-being of workers involved in building projects.
