Marnus Labuschagne, a pivotal figure in Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup triumph, revealed that selectors had considered dropping him on several occasions before the tournament. Despite facing uncertainty, Labuschagne played a crucial role in Australia’s World Cup Final victory over India, contributing an undefeated 58 in the six-wicket win. Labuschagne, initially not part of Australia’s provisional World Cup squad, joined the team as a last-minute addition due to Ashton Agar’s calf injury. Throughout the group stage, his place in the side was questioned as he struggled with form, scoring 304 runs from nine innings. Reflecting on his rollercoaster journey, Labuschagne expressed his belief in a higher force playing a role in his World Cup experience. Despite moments where he was close to being dropped, unexpected incidents, such as injuries or mishaps, paved the way for his continued presence in the playing XI. Acknowledging the trust shown by selectors, coach Andrew McDonald, and captain Pat Cummins, Labuschagne credited their confidence in him during crucial knockout matches. He emphasized that having the full squad available for the last two games allowed him to contribute when needed, ultimately leading to Australia’s World Cup triumph.
