SC Adjourns Hearing In Defamation Case Against The Wire Editors

New Delhi

The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing of a petition filed by former JNU professor Amita Singh against the Delhi High Court’s order that quashed summonses against The Wire’s editor and deputy editor. The summonses were related to an article allegedly claiming that Singh prepared a dossier labeling Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as a den of organised sex racket. The bench, comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia, adjourned the hearing until February 13, citing the need for ample time to address the issue, with farm fires taking up a significant portion of the day’s proceedings. In 2016, Singh filed a complaint asserting that an article by The Wire’s Deputy Editor implied she prepared a dossier characterizing JNU as a den of organized sex racket. Singh alleged defamation and a hate campaign against her. The Delhi High Court, in March 2023, quashed the summoning order, stating that nothing in the article could be considered defamatory against Singh.
