Construction Of Four New Landfill Units For Mixed Waste For The City

Bengaluru

In an effort to address the ongoing challenges in garbage segregation, the Bangalore Solid Waste Management Company (BSWML) has decided to build four new landfill units to manage the mixed waste generated daily. Despite the city’s mandate for waste segregation into raw, dry, and sanitary categories, the sorting rate has not exceeded 30%. Allegations suggest that contractors may be mixing segregated garbage. While the city has invested in waste treatment plants, these facilities are not receiving raw waste to full capacity, leaving the BSWML to rely on landfills for mixed waste disposal. Bengaluru generates approximately 5,500 tonnes of waste daily, with 3,000 tonnes of mixed waste ending up in landfills. The current Bagalur Landfill Unit, with an area of about 7-8 acres, is close to reaching its capacity. The BSWML has invited short-term tenders for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the four new landfill units. The long-term plan includes the construction of green, dry, and sanitary waste management units on 400 acres of land, but this process will take time to complete.
