Cherkadi Kamalaksha Prabhu, a celebrated Yakshagana artiste and recipient of the prestigious Aryabhata Award, passed away at the age of 59 on Tuesday after a brief illness. He breathed his last at KMC Hospital, Manipal.
Kamalaksha Prabhu was the visionary behind the Balamitra Yakshagana Mandali in Saralabettu, Manipal, dedicated to nurturing young talents in the traditional art form of Yakshagana. His tireless efforts inspired countless children to embrace the art, ensuring its preservation and propagation for future generations.
His contributions extended beyond borders as he brought Yakshagana to the global stage, performing in South Africa and Dubai. Domestically, he led children’s Yakshagana troupes to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, showcasing the vibrancy of this traditional art form.
Recently, he made history by leading a Yakshagana troupe to perform at the Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, marking the temple’s first-ever Yakshagana performance. His efforts were lauded by Pejawar Swamiji during the event.
A retired senior official from the ophthalmology department at KMC Hospital, Kamalaksha Prabhu’s legacy lives on through his wife, two sons, and the countless Yakshagana enthusiasts and young artists he mentored. His untimely demise is a profound loss to the world of Yakshagana and cultural heritage.
