Mangaluru
In an effort to ensure safety of residents in the city, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to issue identity cards to pushcart vendors, who sell vegetables and other items in residential and other areas in the city.
Accordingly, the urban local body will verify the credentials of vendors and issue ID cards with details of the allotted location.
Vendors will have to conduct business in the specified area. In the first phase, 66 pushcart vendors will be given ID cards on November 1, said Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur. District Minister Dinesh Gundurao will distribute the identity cards. The identity cards will mention the area for carrying out business using pushcarts.
The officials will carry out surprise inspections to ensure that vendors do not deviate from the conditions regarding the area.Commissioner CL Anand CL said that the MCC has received over 900 applications from street, pushcart and head load vendors, to carry out vending in the MCC limits in the last one year.
All the identity cards issued way back in 2014 will be null and void, and the new applications are being scrutinised. After the scrutiny, identity cards will be issued in a phased manner, he said.
The MCC has been identifying space for setting up vending zones for the street vendors to carry out vending as per Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, and Karnataka Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Rules. The process of identifying vending zones in all wards in the city will be completed in 20 days.
The MCC has received over 400 applications from street vendors to carry out vending in a particular area. Identity cards will be issued to the applicants after verification, he added.
