The water-starved residential layouts of the cty – developed and approved by the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) – may soon get drinking water from Kabini as the Authority has resolved to fully foot the cost of supplying water to those areas from Bidaragod drinking water supply project.

The project is being upgraded from 60 MLD to 180 MLD – an increase of 120 MLD – with the MUDA coming forward to fund Rs. 150 crore towards upgrading the project, facilitating the supply to most MUDA layouts and private layouts developed with the approval of the Authority.

It was earlier decided that the MUDA would grant Rs. 100 crore and the remaining Rs. 50 crore has to be sourced from Centre’s Jal Jeevan Mission.

However, considering the urgency of the works, the MUDA, after a recent meeting that was chaired by Minister in charge of Mysuru district ST Somashekar and Minister for Urban Development BA Basavaraj, resolved to bear the expenditure entirely and the same has been announced in its recent budget.

MUDA Chairman HV Rajeev told that MUDA would transfer Rs. 150 crore to the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB) which is implementing the Bidaragod project.

In addition, the MUDA has allocated a sum of Rs. 25 crore for Hale Undawadi drinking water project besides Rs. 10 crore for the construction of six MBRs for establishing storage facilities and laying pipelines for the distribution.

Sharing the finer details of the announcements made in the recent budget, Rajeev said a sum of Rs. 1 crore has been set aside for a feasibility study on developing “Neo Metro” or “Metro Lite” network in Mysuru, keeping in view the development the city would witness in the next 10 years in view of Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, expansion of the airport runway and the proposed bullet train connectivity.

The MUDA has proposed to develop 8 lakes this year at a cost of Rs. 9 crore, clearing the encroachments and restoring the lake ecosystem. It has proposed to decontaminate the lakes to which sewage was flowing directly from nearby layouts that lacked underground drainage system (UGD).

Devanoor Lake, Dalvoy Lake, Koorgalli Lake, Kergalli Lake and other lakes coming under the MUDA limits that are in contaminated state would get a new lease of life, thanks to “Probiotic Enzyme Dosing Technology and Bio Remediation”. A sum of Rs. 1.50 crore has been set aside for taking up the project on a pilot basis at Dalvoy Lake which is highly polluted, Rajeev said.

The problem of streetlights on Outer Ring Road (ORR) will get a permanent solution as the MUDA has allocated Rs. 12 crore towards installing LED lights and replacing old cables with new ones for making the lights functional and facilitating illumination of ORR. The MUDA will also replace streetlights with LED bulbs as being done in the MCC limits, he added.
