Shakti Scheme Effect, State Needs An Additional 5,796 buses

After the implementation of the Shakti Scheme, one of the five guarantees of the state government, there has been an economic recovery in the state transport corporations and the demand for buses has also increased. Though 24,000 buses are currently being operated by the four corporations, considering the impact and population of the Shakti scheme, another 5,700 buses are required.

At present, four transport corporations in the state are providing road transport services and are managing the road network through bus services across the state. Of this, KSRTC has the lion’s share. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has 8,143 buses and requires 2,250 additional buses. Similarly, the   Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has 6,607 buses and requires 1,891 additional buses. The North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation has 4,856 buses and requires 1,000 additional buses. The Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation has 4,566 buses and requires 655 additional buses. There are 24,172 buses from the four corporations and an additional 5,796 buses are required.

Tenders have been floated for the purchase of 620 buses in KSRTC and 300 electric buses to be operated on the GCC model. The BMTC is in the process of inducting 921 GCC type electric buses, 840 diesel buses, 100 GCC model mini electric buses and 20 mini electric buses.

The tender process for the purchase of 285 BS-VI diesel buses from the North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has been completed and the new buses will be inducted into the corporation soon. The process of procurement of 802 buses from Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation has been completed and it has been decided to provide transport service as per the demand of Shakti scheme.
