Though the State government had decided to make the jobs of Civic Workers working in urban local bodies permanent, more than 700 other workers directly involved in waste management in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) are deprived of the benefit.
Drivers, loaders and helpers, who have been working closely with pourakarmikas to keep the city clean, have not been considered while implementing the government’s decision. The MCC has decided to seek the government’s direction to make the jobs of 591 contract workers, who are working   in the city, permanent.
Premanand Shetty, Chief of ruling party in MCC council, said that the Antony Waste Handling Cell Limited (AWHCL) has been carrying out the collection and transportation of waste from 60 wards of the city. Meanwhile, the waste management is being done through civic workrs, helpers and drivers, who are working on an outsource basis. As per a government order dated August 7, 2017, the job of civic workers being made permanent in a phased manner. While the jobs of many civic workers have already been made permanent, the process for others is being continued. As per the 2017 government order, only civic workers will benefit. Those who work along with civic workers like loaders, helpers and drivers will not receive any benefit from the government order, Shetty said. there are 146 drivers and 591 loaders and helpers, who are working in waste management on an outsource basis in the MCC, he said.
Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur said that a resolution in this regard was taken at a council meeting. Since drivers, loaders, helpers and UGD workers have been carrying out work that is similar to that of pourakarmikas, hence, the government should consider bringing their jobs under the direct payroll, he demanded.
