A case has been filed against fraudsters after a bullion trader in Ahmedabad was cheated out of 2.1 kg of gold worth ₹1.3 crore using counterfeit currency notes, according to police.

On September 23, Mehul Thakkar, the trader, received a call from the manager of Laxmi Jewellers inquiring about the gold price for a buyer in urgent need. The manager claimed a technical issue with the RTGS system would delay payment, but cash would be provided as a security deposit.

Thakkar sent two employees to collect the cash from an ‘Angadiya’ on CG Road. However, upon checking, they discovered that the ₹1.3 crore in cash was fake. The counterfeit notes featured someone else’s image instead of Mahatma Gandhi’s and had Resolve Bank printed instead of Reserve Bank.

Police have registered the case at Navrangpura station and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the suspects.
