Confusion Over Public Holiday For Lord Ganesh Festival

Must read

Mangaluru

This year there is no public holiday on September 19, the day on which Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated. The Government holiday will be on September 18.

According to the government calendar public holiday is declared on September 18, whereas the actual festival is on September 19. This has caused widespread resentment among people of coastal region.

In the public holidays’ list of 2023 published by the state government, it is mentioned that September 18 is holiday for Varasiddivinayaka Vritha. According to Hindu calendar, September 18 is Gauri Tadige and September 19 is Ganesha Chaturthi. Parents of students of various colleges in the district of Dakshina Kannada have asked the educational institutions to declare holiday on September 19 itself. However, the educational department officials are saying that decision to this effect can be taken only by the State Government.

MLA Vedavyasa Kamath said, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on September 19 in the coastal region of Karnataka. However, the Government holiday is on September 18. This will create issue in celebrating the actual festival. Government should seek information from the coastal region leaders and change the date. Otherwise, the Government should order District Administration to declare September 19 as holiday for coastal region.
