Responding to a surge in cybercrimes within the city, the police have implemented measures aimed at reducing such incidents. Notably, they have initiated the blocking of SIM cards linked to fraudulent activities. Over the past 15 days, the police have taken action to block more than 12,000 SIM cards. According to the police department, the city has witnessed the registration of over 20,000 cybercrime cases so far this year. In a concerted effort to prevent further incidents, the cybercrime control room, situated at the Bengaluru Police Commissioner’s office, has systematically collected details of cybercrimes reported across various police stations in the city. Special attention has been given to identifying the SIM cards associated with these crimes. In collaboration with the Union Home Department, the police have issued orders to block over 12,000 SIM cards that were repeatedly used in various fraudulent activities. This proactive approach is aimed at preventing the reuse of these SIM cards for further criminal activities. Additionally, the police are considering an examination of cases registered in the previous year to identify and block SIM cards connected to cybercrimes. These blocked SIM cards have been found to be operational in northern parts of the country, raising concerns about their potential for misuse. The Bengaluru Police’s efforts to curtail cybercrimes reflect their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents in an increasingly digital landscape.
