Karnataka Institute of Medical Science (KIMS) Radiation Department has started brachytherapy to treat cancer patients. This therapy will treat various types of cancer diseases, including those at the last stage. KIMS is said to be the first Government Medical Institution to get this facility to treat cancer patients.
The state government has sanctioned Rs 3 crore for this treatment facility. The number of cancer patients in the KIMS hospital is increasing year on year. The cost of this therapy in the private sector is nearly Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 per package, but KIMS is providing it for free with accommodation and food for poor patients under government schemes. Soon, this treatment for cancer patients will begin.
KIMS upgraded its linear accelerator into a high-tech Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) machine to treat cancer patients. Through this machine, more than 500 patients were treated. Each day, 50 cancer patients are treated. Now, the KIMS will be equipped with a brachytherapy machine soon.
The head of radiation oncology at KIMS Cancer Hospital MR Giriyappagoudar told   that the cancer department is being upgraded every year. Last year, we got advanced facilities at a cost of Rs 3 crore. KIMS is already providing treatment for cancer patients with this machine. The new therapy will treat cervical cancer, breast cancer, food pipe cancer and other cancers. The therapy will begin in October and machinery will be fitted in September. This therapy will cure cancer patients and also those at the last stage. Overall, the advanced machine will be a boon for poor cancer patients in the North Karnataka region, he added..
