The Mekedatu Project is the only solution to the cauvery water sharing dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. We have informed the Supreme Court about this, Irrigation Minister and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said.
Speaking to the media near his Sadashivanagar residence on Friday, he said that the Court has constituted the Cauvery Management Authority which is a technical committee. Right now, they have to focus on the technical aspects. The only major solution in this situation is the Mekedatu project. Had the Mekedatu dam been constructed, this problem and situation would not have arisen today. Last year, more than 400 TMC of water was wasted and lost to the sea. If some of the water had been retained through the Mekedatu dam, there would have been no problem, he said.
We cannot use the water of Mekedatu dam for irrigation. Can only be used for drinking water. Mekedatu comes in great help in such difficult times. The Supreme Court should take note of this issue. We have raised this issue in our application. We will also bring it to the notice of the Supreme Court, he said.
