Young Indian batter Tilak Varma has expressed his excitement about his selection in the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, stating that while he had dreams of playing ODI cricket, he never imagined making his debut in such a prestigious tournament. The 20-year-old showcased his potential with an impressive performance for the Mumbai Indians in this year’s IPL, followed by a strong start to his international career during India’s recent white-ball series against the West Indies. Tilak Varma played in all five T20I matches against the West Indies, amassing 173 runs in his first international series. His consistent form earned him a spot in India’s squad for the Asia Cup, which is set to begin on August 30. Reflecting on his journey, Tilak expressed his gratitude to captain Rohit Sharma for his mentorship and unwavering support during his time in the IPL. In a video shared by the BCCI, Tilak conveyed his surprise at the opportunity to debut in the Asia Cup: I never dreamed that I would be debuting directly in the Asia Cup, and that too in the one-day side. I was always dreaming that I would be debuting for India in ODIs. But it is a big thing for me. And I always dreamed of this, like debuting for India in ODIs, that too, in like, a single year, I got my T20I debut and suddenly, in the next month, I’m just getting a call for the Asia Cup. So yeah, it is one of my dreams and I’m just preparing for it.
