Irrigation Advisory Committee Chairman RB Thimmapura said that the varabandi system will be followed after the inflow of water from Alamatti and Narayanapura reservoirs is stopped. The issue was discussed at a meeting chaired by Minister Thimmapura at the auditorium of the KBJNL MD’s office at Alamatti in Nidagundi taluk.
After the meeting, RB Thimmapura said that the inflow into the dam has started from July 12. The dam is currently full. The water level is 519.60 metres. Alamatti and Narayanapura reservoirs have 67 TMC of water available for the kharif season. The sowing of kharif season has come down. Water is being released for 120 days from July 27 as the Irrigation Advisory Committee has not been constituted so far. Water is being released through Varabandi after the inflow into the dam has stopped. It has been approved by the Deputy Chief Minister, he said.
The Upper Krishna Project covers an area of 6.68 lakh hectares. After the inflow stops, water will be released to the canals for 14 days and a 10-day bandh. Water will be released for the kharif season till November 23. The minister said a decision in this regard was taken at the meeting. At the same time, 80% of the total irrigated area will be irrigated. He said farmers should grow light crops and use them sparingly so that water is not wasted. From August 28, a 24-day bandh and a 10-day bandh will be observed. He informed that a meeting of the Irrigation Advisory Committee for the rabi season will be held in November.
