Social Welfare and District In-charge Minister Dr. HC Mahadevappa said that Devaraj Urs has shown the world through his administration that he can lead the country by implementing democracy without the support of any caste or money.
After inaugurating the 108th birth anniversary celebrations of former Chief Minister Devaraj Urs at Kalamandira on Sunday, the Minister said Indian politics today is based on caste and money. At a time when people are being divided, created confusion and the spirit of the Constitution is being violated in the name of caste and religion, political power should not fall into the hands of money and caste power, he said.
When Urs became the Chief Minister, he took historic decisions that would transform the lives of the exploited people economically, socially and educationally. He shaped the lives of the poor by eradicating manual scavenging, a twenty-point programme, setting up of backward classes and minorities corporations, he said.
His governance is memorable for the people, the oppressed, the poor of all communities who have created a qualitative political leadership. As long as he was alive, he continued to win from Hunsur constituency. If such an atmosphere is not repeated in the country and in the state, democracy will be in danger and the Constitution will be in danger, he said.
The rule of Devaraj Urs and our government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah are the same. We are following in their footsteps. He called upon our youth to protect the cause of freedom and democracy through secular, democratic, constitutional behaviour.
