Objection over inter-caste marriage – Son convicted of killing father

Accusation on a youth, who had killed his father a year ago at Beltangady, was proved after inquiry of the same at fourth district and sessions court here.

Harish Poojary (28), son of Sridhar Poojary (56), resident of Nadumudyottu, Gardady village of Beltangady, had killed his father on January 18, 2021. A case in this connection was registered in Beltangady police station.

Accused Harish Poojary was in love with a girl of other caste. His family has objected to this relation. In addition, deceased Sridhar Poojary, father of Harish, had said that he will not get him married unless and until Harish’s sister is married off. Harish who was enraged by his father’s objection, had left his home and went along with his lover girl in January 2021. However, after three weeks he returned home along with his lover girl. However, his father objected to take him and his lover inside the house and a verbal argument had ensued between the two.

On the afternoon of January 18, 2021, fierce argument had taken place between accused Harish and his father Sridhar. Harish had threatened his father with life and left home. On the same day, when deceased Sridhar had been to the market and returned home, Harish attacked his father with wooden log and beat him severely on his head and face. Sridhar Poojary had died on the spot. A case was registered in Beltangady police station and inspector Sandesh had investigated the matter and filed chargesheet in the court.

Justice B R Pallavi of fourth district and sessions court had conducted the inquiry and pronounced Harish guilty of killing his father. Quantum of punishment is yet to be pronounced.

Public prosecutor Harishchandra Udyavara had argued for the prosecution. Eleven witnesses deposed before the court and 29 records, proofs were inspected during the inquiry.
