Youth revive dilapidated Haleengadi bus stop

MANGALURU

Members of the media welfare organization ‘Media Manasugalu’ have taken up a commendable cleanliness drive, successfully restoring a heavily neglected and dilapidated bus shelter located on the Highway Service Road in Haleengadi.

The shelter, which serves thousands of daily passengers including students and women traveling toward the Kateel Temple and Kinnigoli, had fallen into severe disarray over the past year. Due to administrative apathy from local authorities, sewage water, rainwater, and drainage overflow from nearby buildings began stagnating around the rest area, turning the space into a breeding ground for bushes, garbage, and discarded plastic items.

Local residents reported that the abandoned shelter had become a haven for anti-social elements and drunkards during the night, causing immense fear and hesitation among women, children, and elderly commuters. Additionally, overgrown trees touching high-voltage electricity poles created severe safety hazards during heavy wind and rain.

Frustrated by the lack of official response despite repeated media reports, organization members stepped forward to perform Shramadaan. Armed with cleaning tools, they cleared out the garbage, mud, and wild bushes. With active support from MESCOM staff, hazardous tree branches near the high-tension lines were safely removed.

The entire structure was then thoroughly washed with water, drains were cleared, and the signboards were refurbished. Prominent members of ‘Media Manasugalu’ alongside local supporters actively participated in the social initiative. Commuters and local residents have warmly praised the youth for their proactive efforts in making the public transit space safe and usable once again.
