The menace of wild elephants continues in the Dugaladka, Kandadka, Neerbidire and Koikuli areas of Sullia Nagar Panchayat. As a precautionary measure, a holiday was declared for the school on Monday after elephants roamed around the Koikuli school premises on Sunday morning.
A herd of wild elephants, which have been camped in the Kandadka area for the past several days, has now entered the Neerbidire and Koikuli areas.
There is a suspicion that they are camping in the forest in the same area, and Koikuli School was declared a holiday on Monday for the safety of the school children. The school reopened on Tuesday with safety measures in place.
Forest Department officials and Elephant Task Force (ETF) personnel visited the elephant transit area, monitored the movement of the elephants, and have begun operations to safely return them to the forest.
However, special precautions have been taken for the safety of children in the wake of the movement of wild elephants in the school environment. The Forest Department has promised to deploy staff for the safety of children during the school period. In the wake of the fear of wild elephants, especially on forest roads, parents have been advised not to send children to school alone, but to accompany their children to school. Similarly, even after school ends in the evening, parents should come to school and take their children home with them. There should be no negligence in the matter of children’s safety. We are in constant contact with the Forest Department regarding the movement of elephants and the situation is being monitored. I appeal to parents not to panic, take necessary precautions and follow the instructions of the department, Sullia Area Education Officer YS Haragi told.
