Local authorities in Hagari conducted a crop insurance and drought management workshop, advising Ballari farmers to adopt short-duration crops before the July 31 deadline.

To safeguard farming communities against climate uncertainties, local authorities organized a special awareness program on crop insurance, drought management, and alternative cropping strategies at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Hagari. The event was held jointly by the Taluk Administration and the Agriculture Department.
Inaugurating the event, Deputy Agriculture Director S.N. Manjunath emphasized that crop insurance schemes are active at the Gram Panchayat level, making every landowner eligible. He advised farmers to enroll before sowing by visiting nearest service centers. He noted that insurance is mandatory for bank borrowers, particularly for key crops like cotton, maize, and drought-resistant varieties.
Assistant Director of Agriculture Garjappa reminded growers that July 31 is the deadline to register for rainfed and irrigated crops, including sunflower and sorghum. Facing low rainfall, officials urged farmers to adopt moisture conservation practices under government schemes like Krishi Bhagya, construct farm ponds, and switch to alternative short-duration crops to prevent total financial loss.
Soil scientist Dr. Ravi S. recommended specific land preparation techniques to maximize rainwater absorption, suggesting green manure cultivation to boost soil health. Weather expert Dr. Krishnamurthy warned of potential rain deficits across many regions, advising farmers to prioritize low-water crops like safflower and pearl millet.
Hundreds of progressive farmers from across Ballari taluk attended the session, receiving practical guidance from agricultural scientists, horticulture officers, and project supervisors to help weather the current agricultural challenges.
