Openers answer critics with commanding partnership ahead of England challenge.

India captain Shubman Gill described the competition for places in the ODI team as a “good headache to have” after openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal produced impressive performances in the final ODI against Afghanistan.
Jaiswal, who has found opportunities limited in the 50-over format due to the presence of established stars Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Gill, made a strong statement with an unbeaten 110. The young Mumbai batter seized a rare chance in the playing XI and guided India to victory while strengthening his case for future selection.
The century was particularly significant for Jaiswal, who has often been forced to wait on the sidelines despite being one of India’s brightest batting talents. Having missed out on regular ODI opportunities, the left-hander knew another failure could have pushed him further down the pecking order, especially with Kohli expected to return from injury ahead of the England series.
Equally important was Rohit Sharma’s contribution. The veteran opener scored a fluent 79 and shared a 170-run opening partnership with Jaiswal. The innings provided a timely boost for Rohit, whose place in India’s long-term ODI plans has been the subject of discussion despite a respectable run of form.
The 39-year-old has continued to score runs but has faced growing scrutiny following his removal as captain. Questions surrounding his future and India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup have added pressure on the senior batter, making his return to form particularly valuable.
Gill acknowledged the challenge facing the selectors if all players are fit for the upcoming England series.
“It’s a good kind of headache to have,” Gill said, referring to the strong performances from multiple players competing for limited spots in the XI.
Gill also praised Jaiswal’s temperament and ability to capitalize on opportunities, expressing confidence that the young opener would continue to make an impact whenever called upon as India prepare for a demanding tour of England.
