Brobbey and Gakpo doubles power Netherlands past Sweden in World Cup

Houston

The Netherlands produced a ruthless attacking display as braces from Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo inspired a commanding 5-1 victory over Sweden in their FIFA World Cup Group F clash.

The emphatic win moved the Dutch to the top of the group with four points from two matches and significantly boosted their chances of progressing to the knockout stage. It was also the Netherlands’ biggest World Cup victory since their famous 5-1 triumph over Spain during the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

The Oranje made a blistering start and took the lead in the fifth minute. Brobbey showcased his strength and pace to finish from close range after an incisive move involving Gakpo. The striker struck again in the 17th minute, meeting a precise cross from Denzel Dumfries to double the advantage and leave Sweden stunned.

Despite creating several opportunities, Sweden struggled to cope with the Netherlands’ movement and speed in attack. The Scandinavian side, which had opened its campaign with a convincing 5-1 victory over Tunisia, found itself chasing the game from the outset.

The Dutch continued their dominance after the break. Gakpo, who had already provided an assist, added his name to the scoresheet with two goals in quick succession to effectively put the contest beyond Sweden’s reach. His brace took his World Cup tally to five goals and reinforced his status as one of the tournament’s most dangerous forwards.

Sweden managed a consolation goal through Anthony Elanga in the 59th minute, his second goal of the competition. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished as the Netherlands maintained control.

Substitute Memphis Depay helped create the fifth goal late in the match, setting up Crysencio Summerville to complete the scoring in the 89th minute.

The result marked Sweden’s heaviest World Cup defeat since a 7-1 loss to Brazil in the 1950 finals and handed the Dutch sole possession of first place in Group F. With momentum firmly on their side, the Netherlands now look well-positioned to secure qualification for the knockout rounds.
