Iran executes protesters for waging war

DUBAI

Iran has executed two men accused of being armed leaders during widespread anti-government protests earlier this year. The judiciary’s official news outlet, Mizan, identified the individuals as Javad Zamani and Abolfazl Saedi. Both men were hanged in Shahrud County after being convicted of “Moharebeh,” a severe Islamic charge meaning waging war against God. Authorities also found them guilty of corruption on earth, harming public security, and burning property, including a local mosque. Human rights groups continue to condemn Iran’s swift executions of political dissidents, but the government maintains the strict punishments are necessary to stop national unrest.
